The event, presenting a series of crisis intervention exercises was held under the 3RP Knowledge Sharing Governmental Platform and was attended by numerous Government Delegations.
Adel Interprets at United Nations Development Programme – a series of crisis intervention exercises by the 3RP Knowledge Sharing Governmental Platform
Adel found it a great privilege to be invited to interpret in this vital regional initiative.
This 3RP Knowledge Sharing Governmental Platform brought together the five governments of the region most affected by the Syria crisis for a knowledge sharing exercise. They also intended to generate new pathways, networks, and lines of communication between national action figures, as well as to develop a roadmap for future knowledge sharing in the region.
“The United Nations Development Programme has been operational in the UAE since 1977. Since then, It has been working closely with national counterparts on the development of nationally-owned projects, while also founding strong partnerships. The UAE Office is also responsible for UNDP’s operations in Qatar and Oman.
UNDP UAE is managed by the Regional Bureau for Arab States based in the UNDP headquarters in New York. The office is headed by the UNDP Resident Representative, who also serves as the UN Resident Coordinator (UN RC) representing the Secretary General of the United Nations and coordinates the operational activities of the UN system at the country level.
The country programme is fully funded by the UAE Government, which gives the UAE its status as a Net Contributing Country (NCC), as all the other GCC countries that have UNDP offices (Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Kuwait).
The UNDP office also supports the work of the entire UN Country Team in the UAE by serving as the Secretariat to the United Nations Resident Coordinator’s office in the UAE. UNDP thus organises the UN Country Team (UNCT) monthly meetings, coordinates the joint UNCT events, and facilitates the work of the non-resident agencies by hosting their visiting delegations to the UAE. This support that UNDP provides to the work of the UN Country Team in the UAE is in line with recent progress in one of the key structural aspects of UN reform which is to bring coherence and cohesion to United Nations activities at the country level.”
Amandla! Adel Alhaimi gets to meet Jordanian powerhouse Ehab Shanti, a middle-eastern visionary whose work in the UN and numerous cultural and empowerment projects have made him a legend in the region.
On 15 December 2016, Adel had the privilege of acting as an interpreter at an event hosted by Mr Shanti, president of Amandla Group which has branches in Jordan and UAE. (Amandla, inspired by the South African struggle for justice against apartheid, is, in fact, taken from the Zulu word for “Power”).
Only Mr Shanti could have taken a serious and somber topic – the refugee crisis in the Middle East – and made it come alive through a series of informal discussions, brainstorming and and role-playing, attended by delegates from refugee host countries such as Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt, Iraq and Turkey. Mr Shanti’s previous role in UNDP has placed him in a unique position from which to facilitate such a challenging forum.
Red Sea’s Adel Alhaimi was inspired by the brilliance of the facilitation process and felt honored to have assisted in such a significant and meaningful project.

Mr Shanti has served on innumerable forums and organizations and aside from his role as a master communicator, is dedicated to serving humanity, reviving art and cultural movements and ceaselessly striving to empower others and we quote from Amandla Group:
“Ehab Shanti is a communications expert with over 15 years of experience. He is the President and Founder of Amandla Group (www.amandlagroup.com), which is a strategic communications consulting firm based in Amman and covering the MENA region. Prior to this, he worked as the Head of Communications of the UNDP in Jerusalem, where he served as the Spokesperson of one of the most sensitive offices of the UN. Called by Al-Quds Newspaper as “the dynamite of the artistic movement,” Mr. Shanti has carried out numerous successful artistic and cultural events that attracted international attention including several art auctions and exhibitions in Jerusalem and Dubai. A Canadian of Arab origin, Mr. Shanti has completed most of his education in Canada and holds a Masters of Public Administration (MPA) from Dalhousie University and several BA’s from Carleton University in Art History, Political Science, and Interdisciplinary Studies (High Honors). Mr. Shanti has extensive experience in communications and campaign organization including founding the Amandla Forum.”

Adel Alhaimi Interprets at UX Conference – this was during a private conference in Dubai which gave Adel a pleasant break from bigger events. Nevertheless, Simultaneous Interpreting is still challenging and requires intensive concentration.
Adel takes a break during a recent UX conference in Dubai
The conference took place on December 6 and as this was a private event, we will simply give you a little bit of information about UX or User Experience design:
“User experience design (UX, UXD, UED or XD) is the process of enhancing user satisfaction with a product by improving the usability, accessibility and pleasure provided in the interaction with the product. User experience design encompasses traditional human-computer interaction (HCI) design, and extends it by addressing all aspects of a product or service as perceived by users.“

The Expo is the largest annual mining show in the Middle East North Africa region and has been running for 9 years. The event has become a marketplace for the latest mining equipment, technology, and services. The event typically brings together government authorities, mining companies, investors, and key solution providers to promote investment, optimize mining operations, and build relationships in the region’s trillion-dollar mining industry.

Although Adel is extremely humble and modest about his interpreting skills, few can contest his natural flair for interpreting at high profile conferences as he enjoys the challenge of working under pressure.
Simultaneous interpreting calls for quick thinking and perfect recall of translation terms, among its many other demands such as confidence and a wide knowledge base.
Adel takes a break while another highly competent colleague fills in
Simultaneous Interpreters are scarce and Adel continues to develop and perfect his skills in this challenging and rewarding career.
Over 60 delegates representing zoo and aquarium institutions from the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Jordan and Palestine, attended the two-day conference.
Adel (on the far right) with delegates
This assignment was one of the lighter parts of interpreting work – and one close to Adel’s heart, as conservation of the planet and wildlife are aspects which he takes great interest in – and he was happy to contribute in a small way.
On site in Al Ain – Adel interprets at 4th Arabian Zoo and Aquarium Conference
Conference and Simultaneous Interpreting seems like a glamorous and interesting career – and so it is. Nevertheless, it comes with its own set of challenges as one has to have nerves of steel, experience and deep cultural sensitivity. In spite of the intense concentration and fast thinking required, it is highly rewarding – and assignments such as this one, with it’s deep significance for the region (and the planet), makes the job a deeply enriching and satisfying one.
For those who haven’t been to the Al Ain Zoo, here’s a short video clip:
